Lorraine was a senior commercial manager for a blue chip company for 21 years. Her last five years were spent managing and restructuring their graphic design studio following a review she conducted on behalf of the main board. It was a successful partnership merging the creative and commercial strengths to establish a centre of excellence for design.
In 2001 an opportunity arose to manage and develop the Curwen Print Study Centre. It allowed Lorraine to use her commercial and marketing strengths in a creative field. It also gave the opportunity to promote and fulfill her interest within the education sector.
The Study Centre has developed considerably under her guidance offering everything from Certificated courses to Family print days & is now at full capacity. Lorraine has introduced an Outreach programme that allows Curwen to take printmaking into the community beyond the physical boundaries of the studio. This has included Blenheim Palace - as part of John Piper exhibition, The British Museum, University of Cambridge - Museum of Zoology, Museum of Anthropology and Kettles Yard as part of "the print show" which achieved national recognition, The Fitzwilliam Museum and numerous schools and colleges.
Emma James is an Artist, Printmaker and Tutor based in her studio in Cambridge. She has a First class Honours Degree in Fine Art from the Cambridge School of Art. She joined the team at The Curwen Print Study Centre as a Tutor in 2010 and has also taught courses at Kettles Yard, Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, Stapleford Granary, Artworks, as well as various schools and colleges. Her work is mainly concerned with the inevitable entropy of all things, particularly human connections. Within the printmaking aspect of her practice she is particularly interested in all forms of relief printmaking.
Anne trained at Curwen Print Study Centre achieving her Certificate in Fine Art Printmaking in 2009 from Stanley Jones MBE and Chloe Cheese MA RCA. Anne divides her time between teaching and working as the studio technician at Curwen with developing her own work.
As a practising illustrator and artist printmaker she creates prints using a variety of printmaking techniques with particular focus on Photopolymer intaglio and Monoprint - alongside a growing interest in traditional letterpress printing.
Hannah Webb divides her time between the Curwen Print Study Centre and Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University where she lectures in Illustration.
Karina got her first taste of printing when studying at Norwich School of Art many years ago, where she created several large abstract screen prints during her foundation course. She then studied for a degree in 3-Dimensional Design in silversmithing at Camberwell School of Art and Craft in London where her work and practice explored the relationships and tensions between form, function and decoration. After spending time raising a family and working as a specialist Early Years Advisory Teacher in Norfolk, she completed the Advanced Certificate in Printmaking course at The Curwen Print Study Centre in 2013 and then the subsequent follow-on course on further printmaking.
Karina has a small studio in south Norfolk where she lives and where she continues to develop her practice as an artist and printmaker. Her work falls in to 2 strands: using techniques such as photolithography and polyester plate lithography, Karina explores the construction of identities and stories within environments, investigating the on-going dialogue between places and people, to narrate experiences ; secondly, using the relief techniques of lino and woodcut, she pursues her deep interest in playing with the components of decoration – shape, colour, line, order and disorder, repetition and juxtaposition. Karina enjoys working in the studio as both a tutor and technician and she values the opportunities offered, when supporting adults and young people, to share skills, experiment with techniques, to play with ideas and to participate in such a wonderful diverse range of courses.
Patsy Rathbone is a Cambridge based artist working primarily in screen printing and textiles. She trained as a fine artist at the Cambridge School of Art, gaining a BA (first) and MFA (Distinction).
Her practice explores the home as a site for art production. Utilizing embedded meaning and our historical connections to household objects as material, her work creates subtle shifts in our relationships to them. Her prints always begin with drawings, developing into complex repeats appearing as decorative patterns from a distance, which on closer inspection reveal unexpected imagery. Dubi's background is in Education. She has developed her artistic skills through a range of courses with the Open College of the Arts, including History of Western Art, Painting and Art & Design for Teachers.
Her interest in photography and image making steered her inexorably towards traditional printmaking and the Curwen Print Study Centre, where she gained her CPSC Fine Art Printmaking Certificate in 2013 following assessment by Stanley Jones MBE and Chloe Cheese MA RCA.
Dubi is a member of the Cambridge Drawing Society and exhibits her prints regularly. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for the printed image and is keen to inspire students of all ages to develop their skills in printmaking.
Charlotte Aldis is based in Cambridge and has studied a variety of disciplines, including textile design and ceramics. It was not until a one-day course in screen printing that she discovered a love of printmaking. She studied at the Curwen Print Study Centre and gained their Certificate in Fine Art Printmaking in 2012 from Stanley Jones MBE and Chloe Cheese MA RCA. She loved the course so much that she did it again in 2016.
Originally an English teacher and then editor of illustrated children’s books, her influences are in the field of illustration. She draws on her surroundings and the people within them: the Cambridgeshire countryside, time spent in Northumberland and her home county of Norfolk. She loves sharing her enthusiasm for printmaking, especially with children and is passionate about the importance of Art teaching within the UK education system.
Susie Turner initially trained and worked as an illustrator, liaising with design groups and publishers, before pursuing her interest in Fine Art Printmaking. Susie studied Fine Art Printmaking at Cambridge School of Art and Camberwell College of the Arts. Based in Cambridgeshire she regularly runs educational creative workshops in fine art printmaking from her studio and on outreach. Over the last twelve years Susie has helped raise the profile of printmaking as a medium for learning by sharing her skills and knowledge with school children, art students, teachers, community groups, museums & galleries, and adults of all abilities. As well as supporting the development of artists’ ideas through print, Susie is very keen to promote ‘participation in the arts’ as a preventative and rehabilitative experience.
Susie has worked in collaboration with Arts and Minds and the National Trust, as part of a ‘Children in Need’ funded project, ‘Inside Out’. Over twelve weeks she devised and delivered a number of participatory workshops for children and their families resident at the NHS Croft Child and Family Unit, Ida Darwin Hospital, in Cambridge. These workshops took place outside, in a woodland wildlife discovery area owned by the National Trust. As part of a residency that followed, at National Trust, Susie worked alongside staff and volunteers learning how to maintain habitats for wildlife and helping engage people with nature in a creative way. During her residency Susie led workshops for adults and children with special needs, on behalf of Rowan Humberstone, Eddies (Cambridgeshire Mencap) and Granta Special School, Linton.
Over the last four years Susie has delivered participatory workshops, on behalf of Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, for students and teachers at William Knibbs Complimentary Education. These workshops take place at a forestry commission site within Fermyn Woods, in Northamptonshire. Susie has also worked as a tutor and workshop leader for the Curwen Print Study Centre, West Yorkshire Print Workshop, Leicester Print Workshop, Red Hot Press, University of Cambridge Museums and Botanic Garden, Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum.
Susie is a member of the Printmaker’s Council. She regularly exhibits and sells her work both locally and nationally. Recent exhibitions include Small Print International Touring Exhibition 2016-17, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, City of London Barbican Centre Library, 50 years of Printmakers Council at New Ashgate Gallery and Bankside Gallery, London, LOOP at Bankside Gallery, University College London Hospital, and Nuffield Health, Cambridge Hospital.
One of the Curwen’s homegrown printmakers, Helen has a love of all forms of traditional printmaking. Drawn particularly to etching, for its versatility and flexibility, Helen spends many happy hours experimenting and developing the medium, allowing process and subject to interplay to dictate creative expression.
With a background in frontline emergency care and specialism in tropical and conflict medicine, it is no surprise that Helen is compelled, in her own work, to reflect the agonies and ecstasies of the human spirit. Having embarked upon a second career in the arts, Helen enthusiastically embraces multiple media, from urban graffiti to bronze sculpture, letting the subject dictate the creative process, but her heart remains in the print room.
Ross Loveday grew up in Wales and studied Optometry in Cardiff, practising as an optician for many years. He started drawing and painting as a hobby in his early 30s, having enjoyed art at school. He began to enter national and regional art exhibitions and was lucky enough to win several prizes, including having work selected by the Prince of Wales and purchased for his private collection. In 1996 he had his first solo exhibition.
Ross created his first prints alongside master printer Stanley Jones at the renowned Curwen Studio in Cambridgeshire. After winning The Julian Trevelyan Award at Originals 2008 (at the Mall Galleries in London) Ross decided to focus on printmaking, working with Leicester Print Workshop who specialise in carborundum printing.
Ross says "Chance and accident in my work are embraced and enjoyed. I don’t draw much or plan anything out and when I start a work I’m never quite sure where it will take me. Although my prints are inspired by the landscape, my emphasis is on abstraction and texture. I use natural earth colours – greys, browns, blues – to suggest the unique feel of a place, to capture a fleeting moment. I try to capture the atmosphere of the British landscape. The transient mood and light of the four seasons is what I aim to achieve in my paintings. I hope to convey the feelings of the place and not it’s description. My inspiration comes from many places – the Saltmarshes of North Norfolk, the Pembrokeshire coast, or on walks closer to home in Essex – but the location itself isn’t that important. I want to convey an atmosphere – the essence of the place – and to capture the mood and light of a particular moment rather than its topography. The subjects are only the starting points, sometimes a small insignificant detail or texture – a thorn bush by a path or twigs poking through the snow – triggers a new print."
Grace Hailstone is an artist printmaker working between Suffolk and London. Her experimental and predominantly abstract practice centres on an emotional response to landscape rather than any form of literal representation. Drawn to the isolated, dramatic and other worldly landscape of Iceland, Grace’s prints encapsulate contrasting earthly forms and expansive skies. Her work seeks to find calm spaces of contemplation, where we can reflect on our connection to nature and our place within it. Her abstract images are based on lived experience, but through the process of making, end up existing as images situated somewhere between reality and fiction. She allows the materials and elements of chance and unpredictability in printmaking guide her work to its final state.
Grace has been artist in residence in Skagaströnd, Iceland and Old Jet, Suffolk and notable commissions include Shakespeare’s Globe, London. Grace was mentored by the late Master Printmaker Stanley Jones MBE and is also Archive Curator at the Curwen Print Study Centre.
Charles Shearer was born in Kirkwall in Orkney. He studied at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and later at the Royal College of Art, London, specialising in illustration. Since graduating he has taught at numerous art schools and print studios, as well as working on commissions for books and magazines. His interest in Printmaking began at art school is his main practice. Drawing is a fundamental starting point for his prints. He developed and honed his practice over years of experience and experimentation, creating his individual style and processes.
Anne Desmet RA has taught wood engraving widely, inc. at the RA Schools, British Museum and Middlesex University and is a former External Examiner in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University and at Kingston College of Art. In 2011, Desmet was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and is only the third wood engraver ever elected to the RA in its entire history. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) and the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE). In 2018, she was elected an Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford.
Desmet’s prints feature in selected solo and group shows worldwide. Since 1987 she has received over 40 national and international awards including (1989-90) a British School at Rome Scholarship in Printmaking. She has had 20 solo shows in London since 1990.
Commissions include engravings and drawings for the Royal Mint, V&A, British Library, British Museum, National Gallery, Sotheby’s, The Times, Vital Arts (London) NHS Trust, Worcester College & Balliol College Oxford and Oxford University Press.
Her work is held in both public and private collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; V&A, National Art Library, The Museum of London, British Museum, and The British Library.
Anita Klein studied at Chelsea and the Slade schools of art. She is a fellow and past president of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers (RE) and her work is in many private and public collections in Europe, the USA and Australia, including Arts Council England and the British Museum. She divides her time between studios in London and Anghiari, Italy.

He was a student at the Royal College of Art 1964-1967. Elected a Royal Academician in 1995 and was Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art 1998-2008. He was awarded an MBE and made Professor Emeritus in 2008. He was elected Treasurer of the Royal Academy and served from 2014 to 2018. In 2021 he was made a Freeman of the City of London.
Chris Orr has had numerous exhibitions throughout the world which include: ‘The Complete Chris Orr’ (touring show), 1976; ‘Many Mansions’ (touring show), 1990; Six Royal Academicians in China’, shown in Beijing, Shanghai, and London, 2005; LithORR graphy’, Royal Academy, Fine Rooms 2012. ‘The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists’ 2018 and ‘The Sleep of Reason” 2022 at the Royal Academy. He shows annually at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the London Original Print Fair and at many other galleries.
His work is in public collections including The Arts Council of England, The British Council, The Science Museum, The British Museum, The Government Art Collection, The Palace of Westminster Collection, The Ruskin Library at Lancaster University, The Queens Collection, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Science Museum, Tate Britain, and Victorian and Albert Museum.
Brought up in Herefordshire, Katherine Jones RA studied at Cambridge School of Art, and MA Fine Art Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, (1998-2001). She currently lives and works in Brixton, South London. She shows widely, is the recipient of numerous awards and is represented in private and public collections worldwide. Jones was elected as a Royal Academician in 2022.
From Armagh, Sheena Vallely is a printmaker and a painter. With a BA in sculpture from Liverpool College of Art she started her own T-shirt label Dirty Dog monoprinting and screen printing her own designs for over ten years in London after which she did a Masters in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. Since then Sheena has lectured in printmaking at LCC, University of Hertfordshire and at APU Cambridge. Sheena exhibits her work internationally and she has had solo exhibitions in Berlin, Dublin, London and Alkmaar, The Netherlands. Ever attracted to new stimuli, Sheena was artist-in-residence at Foundation Veerle Rooms, Antwerp in summer 2022 and since then she has been producing new work alongside Master printer Marie Walker of Clifton Editions, Bristol.
Paul Croft is Lecturer in Printmaking at The School of Art Aberystwyth. Since qualifying as Tamarind Master Printer (1996) his research has focused upon technical, social, historical and contemporary aspects of British and International Lithography. He has published two seminal books on Stone Lithography (2001) and Plate Lithography (2003) and has curated exhibitions: Stone Plate Grease Water International Lithography 2007-8; Contemporary Chinese Printmaking 2014-16; Xiaoxiang Exhibition of International Printmaking 2015; History of British Lithography 1800-2020 (part funded by the Leverhulme) is due to show at the School of Art from October 2022. He has exhibited his own work in the UK, Ireland, USA, China, Australia and New Zealand. As a collaborating printer he has worked with artists from across the UK.
Neil Bousfield RE is a British artist and printmaker working within relief printmaking and contemporary wood engraving. His process uses multiple blocks and reduction methods to create overlays of tone, pattern, colour and image to explore the creation and fragility of place and home. The work considers and questions attachment to place and the fragility of coastal communities, and aims to position the local within a global narrative, that of sea-level rise. Neil's work is held in collections including: The Ashmolean Museum; The V&A; Pallant House; MMU Special Collections; The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Shi; and The Heilongjiang Museum of Printmaking, China.
Sam Marshall studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, and completed her MA diploma at the Royal Drawing School where she now teaches. She originates from the flat fens of Lincolnshire but moved to London as soon as she could. She lived there for 22 years before returning to the countryside. She now lives in a cottage in rural Northamptonshire with her mini dachshund ‘Miss Marple. She has 2 studios in her garden where she makes her work, runs online workshops and holds creative coaching sessions.
Her best-selling book LINOCUT book was published by Bloomsbury in 2023 and is currently working on a book about drawing which will be published in 2026.
Mychael Barratt, Painter & Printmaker, was born in Canada, and has been living and working in the UK since 1984. He is former President of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers. Mychael is a master of many different techniques and is inspired by a wide range of sources. His work is held in museums and collections worldwide including the British Museum and The British Library.
Jim Anderson is a multi-media artist and designer. His work is often steeped in the surreal and the satirical and uses different media and materials with a strong focus on the use of found or recycled items. Jim is a member of The Royal Society of Printmakers, recipient of many prizes, and has contributed to numerous publications. In 1997 he was a co-founder - along with Michael Sims and Christian Pattison - of The Illustrated Ape magazine, and he is co-author with Anne Desmet RA of 'Handmade Prints’. He exhibits internationally, and his prints have been awarded a number of prizes in major national exhibitions. He is a passionate believer in the possibilities of public art, has been involved since 1998 in several large-scale public mosaic projects, and has supervised and undertaken the production of over thirty public mosaic projects.
Dr Veronica Calarco is an Australian artist living in Wales. She worked for ten years in graphic design and commercial print and then completed a BA in printmaking with honors and a postgraduate degree in weaving at the Institute of Arts, Australia National University. In 2021, Veronica completed a PhD in printmaking at the School of Arts, Aberystwyth University specializing in lithography mixed technique printmaking and focusing on endangered and minority languages She recently completed a post-doctoral research project that explored the land we live in though the medium of print. Veronica is a director of Aberyswyth Printmakers and teaches printmaking at the School of Art, Aberystwyth University. In 2014, she established Stiwdio Maelor, an artist residency program in Corris (stiwdiomaelor.com) and in 2021 established a printroom and darkroom.
Artist Printmaker Dale Devereux Barker graduated from the Slade in 1986, where he was taught by Stanley Jones MBE. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers. Dale has been using lino for his printmaking for over forty years, and is constantly reinventing how this humble material can be manipulated into producing surprising and engaging imagery. Dale prefers to be experimental with his work, creating layered vibrant coloured printed images.
